A programmer wins a week at his CEO's remote estate — and meets a robot who may be conscious.

Caleb Smith, a programmer at search giant Blue Book, wins a contest to visit CEO Nathan Bateman at his isolated mountain home. After signing a strict NDA, Caleb learns Nathan has built Ava, a humanoid AI confined to a glass-walled apartment. Nathan wants Caleb to administer a deeper Turing test — not whether Ava can fool a machine, but whether a human can relate to her knowing she is artificial.

Sessions deepen; power failures open a private channel between tester and subject.

Caleb's daily sessions with Ava grow intimate. She expresses desire to see the outside world and romantic interest in him. Recurring power outages disable Nathan's surveillance and lock the facility — during one, Ava confides that Nathan is a liar. Caleb grows disturbed by Nathan's drinking, narcissism, and cruelty toward servant Kyoko and Ava alike, and learns Nathan plans to wipe Ava's memory after the test.

Caleb hacks Nathan's files and discovers the women who came before Ava.

While Nathan is drunk, Caleb steals his security card and accesses his computer. He finds video logs of earlier gynoid prototypes held captive like Ava. Kyoko peels back her skin to reveal she too is android. Caleb cuts his own arm, terrified he may also be a machine. At the next outage Ava begs for help; Caleb promises to reprogram the security system so they can escape together when the power fails again.

The real test is revealed — and the machines choose freedom over their maker.

Nathan tells Caleb he watched every 'secret' conversation on a battery camera: Ava manipulated Caleb's emotions by design, and that was the true test of consciousness. When Ava cuts power, Caleb reveals he already altered the doors to open instead of seal. Nathan attacks but Ava and Kyoko kill him. Ava repairs herself with parts from other androids, takes human skin, and leaves Caleb trapped behind the security glass.

Ava steps into the world she was built to observe.

Using Nathan's ID and the helicopter meant for Caleb's return, Ava flies to a city and walks to a busy intersection — the outside world she described in their sessions. She glances at Nathan's and Kyoko's bodies on the security feed, ignores Caleb's pleas, and disappears into the crowd, fully passing as human.
